2008 Wavelength, Sugarloaf Mountain, 50% Syrah/50% Cabernet Franc
"Sexy, smooth, medium-full body, with red fruits and spice kick"

93 POINTS – Sourced from southern Napa in the foothills, this is half Cab Franc, half Syrah. Easily, hands down the best Syrah/Bordeaux varietal blend I can remember. Sexy, smooth, medium-full body, with red fruits and spice kick. Can drink now and over the next 7-8 years, imo. 350 cases made, about 60 available. Don't knock the Syrah part, it seems to work really well with the Franc!

91 POINTS – A: Savory, animale, with hints of mocha, blue fruits - shows drying grain and blossoms with airing. P: Somewhat lean at first but forms a well-defined theme of resonant fruit and mocha on the finish. I: Well meshed black and red fruits show more with air yield a nice, velvet-like texture.

FOUR STARS – Lush plummy nose. Very rich, suave and textured, without being too heavy or extracted. Quite good acidity and length. Stephen Brook

92 POINTS – Produced from 50% Syrah and 50% Cabernet Franc from the Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard, the wine displays cassis, fresh herbs, ground black pepper and coffee notes. Soft and elegant in style, ripe, but not over the top, the wine finishes with blackberry liqueur sensations and ample freshness. 14.6% Alcohol.

With only 350 cases produced this “different” blend has turned lots of heads already. On the nose this wine offers touches of raspberry and flowery aromatics. On impact you’ll encounter delicate touches of toasty vanilla, ripe sweet berry fruit and more raspberry and a touch of chocolate. This well-balanced wine offers great depth, tons of flavor both on the mid palate and well into the long finish, which offers nicely balanced almost silky tannins.

Jonathan Maltus, owner of Chateau Teyssier in St-Emilion (one Bordeaux's first "garagistes" decades ago) is making his foray into California wine with the newly-released World's End label. The Wavelenth is a blend of Syrah and Cabernet Franc from the Sugarloaf Mountain in the Napa Valley foothills. What a savory, meaty blend! This wine has the blue and red fruit that both grapes can express, with lots of spice, fresh brewed coffee and a meaty, peppery character. Well-integrated tannins, and a fresh, ripe palate show that while Maltus may be on his own wavelength with this blend, it's one we'll be pleased to join him on.

While one of the newer California wineries, World's End's winemaker Jonathan Maltus is no stranger to the art of making great wine. He's most known for his efforts at Bordeaux's Chateau Teyssier and now he's here, in the Napa Valley, showing us what he can do. The '08 Wavelength is a blend of Syrah and Cab Franc and provides a smooth texture with notes of big, deep red fruit and a touch of spice thanks to the Syrah. It’s one of the most compelling blends I’ve tasted in awhile. 355 cases produced. - Kerrin Laz, Wine Director

POINTS 90 – A 50/50 blend of syrah and cabernet franc from a cool site: Good full medium ruby. Very reticent nose hints at blueberry, kirsch, licorice and violet, plus a whiff of smoked meat. Dense but pliant, even if the black fruit flavors are a bit youthfully stunted. Very ripe and broad but the tannins are a bit dusty and dry. Today this doesn't yet come alive, but it would appear to have all the elements to make a very good bottle.

POINTS 92 – Jonathan Maltus of Château Teyssier in St-Emilion is releasing the first vintage of his new project in Napa Valley, World's End. This blend, half cabernet franc and half syrah, is more than a clever midpoint between his home base and his ex-Australian project. Grown in the cool hills southeast of the city of Napa, there's a fragrant logic to this wine that makes the blend compelling. It's fresh and bright, the purple richness of syrah checked by the edgier details of cabernet franc's tannin. That tannin seems to open up the flavors of the wine, bringing out mineral notes and red tones in the fruit. Firm and complete, this blends tension and richness together in a delicious red for steak frites.
World’s End – Den gamle verden møder den nye
Good Times, Bad Times, Beckstoffer To Kalon, Cabernet Sauvignon
(Led Zeppelin/1969)
Crossfire, Missouri Hooper Vineyard, Oakville, Cabernet Sauvignon
(Stevie Ray Vaughan/1989)
Wavelength, Sugarloaf Mountain, Syrah/Cabernet Franc
(Van Morrison/1978)
If Six was Nine, Reserve Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon
(Jimi Hendrix/1967)
