Navnet "Kalkstein" kommer ikke af det blå. Druerne til denne forrygende vin kommer nemlig fra en jordbund med et ekstremt højt indhold af kalksten, samt fra ældre vinstokke, end i deres Riesling Trocken. Det resulterer i, at de nænsomt håndhøstede Riesling-druer videregiver en elegant mineralsk og nærmest saltet smag og tekstur i vinen. I duften kan man desuden spore en diskret og let sødme ala frisk honningmelon.
For at opretholde den højest mulige kvalitet i deres vine, arbejder biodynamiske Weingut Wittmann med lave høstudbytter, hvor druerne nøje udvælges med god, gammeldags håndkraft. Denne flaske er en fremragende introduktion til Wittmanns fortryllende univers af fremragende vine. Ovenikøbet til en yderst fornuftigt pris, vinens tårnhøje kvalitet taget i betragtning.
James Suckling - 94
A rich and complete dry riesling with impressive power and concentration. Wonderful balance and textural complexity right through the medium- to full-bodied palate. So much peach and Mirabelle plum fruit, but it’s not a jot loud. In fact it is the subtlety of the aromas that’s most striking. Mostly from young vines in the Morstein GG site and the neighboring commune of Gundersheim. Drink or hold.
Vinous - 92
The 2023 Riesling Vom Kalkstein was harvested from the younger vines in the top sites of the Gundersheim and Westhofen, on limestone soils, from Höllenbrand, Brunnenhäuschen and Morstein. A touch of passion fruit leaf provides a savory frisson on the nose. Brightness, freshness, lightness and coolness are central to this wine. It radiates freshness and clarity. Bone-dry and crystalline, this is very clear-cut, sprightly number. (Bone-dry)
Robert Parker - 92
The 2023 Riesling trocken vom Kalkstein is pure yet fragrant on the intense and elegant nose the displays ripe fruit aromas with hints of caramel, cracknel and salt breeze. Intense and vital on the palate, this is an energetic and textural Riesling with ripe, refined and elegant acidity. The finish is savory and stimulating saline and develops a stunning intensity and terroir expression. The terroirs here are several, though, but they are all on limestone, and limestone is the character of this lean and precise, very elegant dry Riesling. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in October 2024.
