En besværlig drue har fået kærlig behandling.
Graciano er en udfordrende drue at arbejde med. Den giver lavt udbytte, og den modner sent. Så en lang og udfordrende sæson, kan ende med at give et elendigt resultat. Alligevel valgte Tom Puyaubert at plante Graciano i La Mimbrera-marken, fordi druesorten spejler områdets terroir mesterligt. Druesorten laver elegant vin, som står i modsætning til de mere tunge Tempranillo-vine området er kendt for. Her er smag af krydderier og saftig frugt. Alle som vil prøve dybden i Riojas potentiale, bør smage denne vin.

Intense nose of blackcurrant and wild flowers, minerals and subtle oak. Palate offers intense, clean red berries and a note of minerals. Ripe tannin, very persistent finish with notes of tobacco leaves.

When Puyaubert bought La Mimbrera vineyard in Ábalos, there were old vines used for the regular La Mimbrera bottling, but part of the land lay fallow, so he planted Graciano; those vines now produce the 2018 La Mimbrera Graciano. It's a warm terroir in a Mediterranean environment of rosemary and thyme, the only place that was not hit by the 2017 frost, a place apt for the grape, with gravel and lots of active limestone in the soil. He wanted a Graciano of freshness, elegance and spice, and this example certainly shows it, with lots of cracked peppercorns and cloves, an herbal touch and a medium-bodied palate with only 13% alcohol and great freshness.
