The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets reveals scents of cassis, plums, dark chocolate and spices framed by a generous application of toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound, with tangy acids and an abundance of chalky tannin underpinned its deep core of fruit, this is unusually structured this year and will require patience.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was picked at 20hl/ha due to widespread millerandage that produced tiny berries, according to Clerget. This is completely de-stemmed and raised in 30% new oak. It has a vigorous, intense bouquet of red and black fruit mixed with loamy aromas and undergrowth, a touch of incense emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a superb bead of acidity. Very succulent and voluminous in the mouth, perhaps just needing a little more bite and definition on the finish, but certainly very persistent. Cellar this for five years if you can and it should turn into quite a substantial Volnay.

Sweet spot Outstanding

Planted 1938, vines which never give more than 20 hl/ha, all destemmed, because the limestone gives the finesse needed. Brilliant nose here in its fully infused style. Magical fruit at the front of the palate that then continues all the way through to a sublime finish. Worthy of the fame of the vineyard!

Bright mid crimson. More peppery and spicy than the Santenots. The fruit smells fresher as if there were some whole-bunch component here. Very different style too, tighter and more vibrant and much more Pinot though still ripe, rich and packed with fruit intensity. Firm and smooth but dense tannins. I think this will age even longer than the Santenots.
